Trading Amazon Around Earnings: How to Plan the Trade

BloFin Academy09/28/2026

Four times a year a large company tells the market how much it sold and earned, and its share price often moves more in the next few hours than in a normal month. Trading around that release means deciding before it arrives what you will hold, how large the position will be, and what you can still do once the numbers are out.

For Amazon, the timing sets most of those choices, because Amazon publishes its results after the US stock market closes. On BloFin you can hold tokenized Amazon, a token that follows Amazon's share price, through the AMZNX/USDT Spot pair.

You can also trade the AMZNUSDT Perpetual, a contract that follows Amazon's price with leverage. Both keep trading after the US close, while the perpetual may accept only orders that close or reduce a position.

What is trading Amazon around earnings?

Trading Amazon around earnings is planning a position for the hours before and after Amazon publishes its quarterly results. It means choosing the instrument, sizing the position for the kind of move Amazon has made on past earnings nights, and placing any stop before the release. On BloFin, new perpetual positions may have to wait until the US market reopens.

An earnings release is the company's report of its sales and profit for the quarter, published with a forecast for the next one. The share price reacts to how those numbers compare with what investors expected. That reaction is fast and can be large, because the whole market learns the same news at the same moment.

The plan has three parts, and each one is settled before the release. The first is the instrument: AMZNX moves one for one with Amazon's price and cannot be liquidated, while the perpetual adds leverage and can be. The second is size: a position small enough that Amazon's usual earnings-night move cannot close it for you. The third is timing: knowing which orders the venue will accept once the US market has shut.

Say you already hold AMZNX and do not want to trade at all. The plan still matters, because the token will reprice overnight while you sleep. After the July 30, 2026 release, Amazon's share opened 12.5% above the previous close, and after the February 5, 2026 release it opened 9.0% below it. On an ordinary trading day since October 2020, the share's median move has been 1.2% (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history).

Amazon's earnings time in UTC and BloFin's trading hours

On July 30, 2026, Amazon filed its second-quarter results with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) at 4:06 p.m. Eastern (source: SEC filing record). Its call with analysts followed at 5:00 p.m. Eastern (source: Amazon webcast notice). In Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), that was 20:06 and 21:00, after BloFin's regular stock-futures hours had ended.

The Nasdaq trading day runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern time (source: Nasdaq trading hours). BloFin's regular hours for stock futures follow the same session. During US daylight saving time they run from 13:30 to 20:00 UTC, and in standard time from 14:30 to 21:00 UTC. Outside those hours, and at weekends and on US market holidays, BloFin may limit stock futures trading to reduce-only orders (source: BloFin stock futures trading update).

A reduce-only order can only make a position smaller or close it. So during those seventeen and a half hours you can take risk off, but opening a new perpetual position may have to wait for the morning. Amazon has not yet posted a date for its third-quarter results. Its third-quarter calls from 2020 to 2025 all fell between October 26 and October 31, inside US daylight saving time, so the same clock is likely to apply (source: Amazon investor events). Reading the release itself starts with four lines, beginning with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its growth rate, as Amazon earnings reports explained shows.

How AMZNX and AMZNUSDT moved on the last two earnings nights

Both of BloFin's Amazon markets moved within the first hour after the second-quarter release. Amazon's share closed at $235.50 on July 30, 2026 (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history). By 21:00 UTC, BloFin's AMZNUSDT Perpetual had traded at 254.78 USDT and AMZNX at 253.98, both about 8% higher.

Nasdaq opened at $265.00 the next morning, so most of the move had already happened on BloFin during the night (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history). A trader who held through the close felt the move within the hour, not at the open.

The April 29, 2026 release shows the other side of that speed. The share had closed at $263.04 (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history). In the first three hours after the close, the perpetual traded as low as 246.79 and as high as 276.88, about 6.2% below and 5.3% above that close. The next day the share finished only 0.8% higher (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history). A position with little room to spare could have been closed out on the way down, even though the day ended almost flat.

These are last-traded prices. BloFin triggers a liquidation when the mark price reaches the liquidation price (source: BloFin forced liquidation rules). The mark price is calculated from the index price, while the last price can spike briefly on a single large trade in a thin market (source: BloFin leverage and liquidation guide).

Both markets reprice on the same news, and an AMZNX/USDT trade placed around a results night pays the spot fee for your account tier in the BloFin fee schedule.

Sizing a position for Amazon's earnings moves

The size that matters is the distance from your entry to your liquidation price, set against the moves Amazon has made on past earnings nights. On the first tier of AMZNUSDT, BloFin requires you to keep 2.50% of the position as maintenance margin, and it allows up to 20x leverage (source: BloFin AMZN position tiers).

That makes the rough distance to liquidation one divided by your leverage, less 2.5%. At 20x it is about 2.5%, at 10x about 7.5%, and at 5x about 17.5%. BloFin also counts the closing fee in the margin ratio, so the real distance is a little shorter (source: BloFin forced liquidation rules).

Amazon's opening gap is the difference between the close before a release and the next morning's opening price. Over its last 24 earnings releases, from October 2020 to July 2026, the median opening gap was 6.8% and the largest was 12.5% (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history).

The gaps are measured from daily prices and ignore which way the move went. Only a gap against your position can liquidate it, so a long position was at risk from the falls and a short from the rises. The count also leaves out the moves during the night, which on April 29 were larger than the gap at the open.

Say you post $1,000 of margin at 5x, which opens a $5,000 position. A 12.5% move against you, the largest opening gap in the record, costs about $625. The position stays open, because the move is still well short of the 17.5% line. At 10x the same $1,000 opens $10,000, and the same move costs about $1,250, more than the margin, so the position would already be closed. Isolated and cross margin change which funds are at risk, as how to trade Amazon with leverage shows, and the same sizing sum works for any market in BloFin's guide to position sizing.

What the funding rate showed before the releases

The funding rate is a small payment between holders of long and short positions that keeps a perpetual's price close to the price it follows. On AMZNUSDT it is settled every eight hours, from 00:00 Hong Kong time (source: BloFin AMZNUSDT contract details). Traders often watch it for a sign of how others are positioned.

BloFin's funding record for AMZNUSDT starts on February 9, 2026, so it covers two releases, April 29 and July 30. In the five days before July 30 and the day after it, every AMZNUSDT funding payment was between −0.003% and +0.003% (source: BloFin AMZNUSDT funding history). The share then rose 15.3% on July 31, and funding had shown nothing beforehand (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history). In the five days before April 29, the large payments came at the weekend. The Sunday, April 26 settlement at 16:00 UTC was +0.059%, and the Monday, April 27 settlement at midnight UTC, which closed that weekend, was +0.207%. From 08:00 UTC on April 27 to the end of April 30, every payment stayed within ±0.01% (source: BloFin AMZNUSDT funding history).

The large payments on AMZNUSDT come at weekends instead. Since BloFin's record began on February 9, 2026, 46 payments have been 0.05% or larger in either direction, and 36 of them were settled at the weekend, counting the midnight UTC settlement that closes Sunday (source: BloFin AMZNUSDT funding history). The largest was −0.64% on April 13, 2026, that Monday's midnight settlement.

Say you hold a $5,000 AMZNUSDT position. A payment of 0.003%, the most any settlement reached in the days around July 30, comes to $0.15. The −0.64% settlement on April 13 comes to $32 on the same position, more than 200 times as much.

So the funding rate tells you what holding the position will cost, not which way Amazon's results will move the price. On this record, the largest payments came at weekend settlements, and an earnings night added almost nothing.

How to set up the trade before the US close

Most of the decisions have to be made before the US close on the day Amazon reports, while opening orders are still accepted. The first is the instrument. AMZNX follows Amazon's share price one for one, with no leverage and no liquidation price, so a 12.5% gap costs a holder 12.5% of the holding.

The perpetual can multiply the move, and it can close the position for you. The choice between AMZNX and the AMZN perpetual comes down to whether you want leverage, and the liquidation risk that comes with it. If you use the perpetual, choose the margin mode and the stop at the same time as the size. In isolated margin, only the margin you assign to that position can be lost. A stop placed on the opening order, or added while the session is still running, is in place before the release lands.

On July 30 the perpetual went from about 236 to about 255 inside an hour, and most of that climb came in the first few minutes after the close, so a short position's stop anywhere in that range was triggered almost at once. A stop-market order then fills at the next available price, which can be well beyond the level you set, and a stop-limit order may not fill at all when the price jumps past its limit (source: BloFin leverage and liquidation guide).

Say you hold a 5x long on the perpetual with a stop 6% below your entry, and the price falls the way AMZNX did on February 5, 2026, to 9.0% below Amazon's closing price within the first hour. The stop would trigger and fill somewhere below the 6% level. You would be out with a loss larger than planned but far from your liquidation price. On a night like July 30 the same stop would never be touched.

What you can do after Amazon reports

Once Amazon's numbers are out, the choices narrow. Until the US open the next day, 13:30 UTC or 14:30 UTC in standard time, BloFin may accept only orders that reduce or close a perpetual position (source: BloFin stock futures trading update). New positions may have to wait for the open, while AMZNX keeps quoting overnight.

You can still take profit, cut a loss or close the whole position. Some traders wait for the US market to open before acting on the news. CenterPoint Securities' guide suggests giving the open 15 minutes or more for the first reactions to settle (source: CenterPoint Securities).

Waiting has its own risk. Say you held a 5x long with $1,000 of margin, a $5,000 position, from 262.89 on the perpetual at the April 29 close. By 13:00 UTC the next day, at 272.09, it showed a profit of about $175. An hour later, after the US open, the price was 259.66 and the same position showed a loss of about $61.

Amazon's own record gives one more reference point for the days after. For each of the last 24 releases, the close three trading days later, which for a Thursday report is the following Tuesday, was on the same side of the pre-release price as the first day's close (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history). In 18 of the 24, it had moved further in that direction.

That record describes what happened, and it says nothing about the next release. Between results, other forces that move Amazon's stock price take over, from AWS growth and capital spending to interest rates. The FTC's monopoly case also runs on a court calendar, with dispositive motions due on October 16, 2026 and a bench trial set for March 29, 2027 (source: FTC v. Amazon docket). A ruling can land after the US close just as results do, and the FTC antitrust case and Amazon stock sets out that calendar.

Holding AMZNX through an Amazon earnings release

An AMZNX holder carries Amazon's earnings-night move directly, because the token follows the share. The token has no liquidation price, so the question on an earnings night is whether you are comfortable holding through a move of the size Amazon has made before.

Say you held 10 AMZNX at the July 30, 2026 US close, when the pair last traded at 235.75 USDT, worth 2,357.50 USDT. An hour later, at 253.98, the same tokens were worth 2,539.80 USDT, about 182 USDT more. On February 5, 2026 the move went the other way: 10 tokens worth 2,234.60 USDT at the close, at 223.46, were worth 2,025.40 USDT an hour later, at 202.54, about 209 USDT less.

That move reaches you whether or not you are watching, so the decision to hold is made before the US close, like the others. A holder who wants less exposure through an earnings night can reduce the position before the close and rebuild it after the news, paying the spot trading fee on both trades.

Holding AMZNX and trading the AMZNUSDT Perpetual are BloFin's two ways to take a position on Amazon. The perpetual lets you go short as well as long. It adds leverage and a funding payment every eight hours (source: BloFin AMZNUSDT contract details).

Frequently asked questions

What is the 3-day rule after earnings?

The 3-day rule is an informal habit of waiting until the third business day after big news before trading, so the first reactions can settle. Kiplinger's Jeffrey Kosnett applies it to any news-driven market crisis (source: Kiplinger). On Amazon's results, waiting has usually meant a bigger move: after October 27, 2022 the share closed 6.8% lower the next day and 12.8% lower three trading days later (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history).

What time is Amazon's February earnings call in UTC?

Amazon's fourth-quarter results come out in early February: on February 5, 2026, its call with analysts began at 2:00 p.m. Pacific time, which was 22:00 UTC (source: Amazon investor events). That is inside US standard time, which runs from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March (source: BloFin stock futures trading update). In standard time the 4:00 p.m. Eastern close is 21:00 UTC, and BloFin's regular stock-futures hours restart at 14:30 UTC the next day (source: BloFin stock futures trading update).

What happens to an open AMZNUSDT position when Amazon reports?

The position stays open through the night and keeps gaining or losing with the perpetual's price until you close it, a stop you set is hit, or the mark price reaches its liquidation price. Before the US open it also passes two funding settlements, at 00:00 and 08:00 UTC, because BloFin settles AMZNUSDT funding every eight hours from 00:00 Hong Kong time, which is 16:00 UTC (source: BloFin AMZNUSDT contract details). After the July 30, 2026 release, those two payments were −0.0025% and −0.0021%, about five cents in total on a $1,000 position (source: BloFin AMZNUSDT funding history).

Does the first hour after Amazon reports show where the stock will close?

On the two releases BloFin's AMZNUSDT record covers, it did once. On July 30, 2026, Amazon's share closed at $235.50 and finished the next day 15.3% higher (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history). BloFin's perpetual had closed its first hour after the release at 254.78, about 8% above that close. On April 29, 2026, the share closed at $263.04 and finished the next day 0.8% higher (source: Yahoo Finance AMZN history). The perpetual's first hourly close was 253.52, about 3.6% below that close, yet two hours later it was at 271.34.

What is an implied move, and does it apply to the AMZNUSDT Perpetual?

An implied move is the size of move that Amazon's listed options are priced for over an earnings date. Before a release, options that expire after it carry an extra event premium, which disappears once the result is public (source: Saxo, July 28, 2026). The AMZNUSDT Perpetual is not an option. Its holding cost is funding, settled every eight hours (source: BloFin AMZNUSDT contract details). What the perpetual shows instead is the move itself: on July 30, 2026, most of it was in the perpetual's price within the first hour after the US close.

Nothing in this article constitutes financial advice, and nothing in it is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold Amazon in any form. Over its last 24 earnings releases, Amazon has moved as much as 12.5% between one close and the next open, and the AMZNUSDT Perpetual can be liquidated by a move smaller than that at high leverage, taking all the margin behind the position. A stop can fill well beyond its price when the market jumps, and new perpetual positions may be refused outside regular hours. Past performance does not indicate future results.
