XRP vs Stellar and XLM: close cousins built for different owners

XRP and Stellar are close cousins. Both move money across borders in seconds without mining, both use a native token as a bridge between currencies, and both trace back to the same engineer, Jed McCaleb. The differences that matter are about who steers each network and what it is tuned to do.

That shared root is why the two are compared so often, and why the comparison is easy to get wrong. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, and the company Ripple is the most visible force around it. Stellar and its token XLM are stewarded by a nonprofit foundation with a stated focus on financial access. Same starting point, different destinations.

The clearest way to see the split is to begin with where both networks came from.

A shared origin, then a split

Where they lean apart is emphasis. Ripple has focused on selling XRP-based settlement to regulated financial institutions, so XRP's story is tied to enterprise payment deals. The pattern is the reverse of most crypto comparisons. On the technical rows, speed and cost, the two are near-twins. The real daylight is in the last three rows: who steers the network, and which users each one courts. How they reach agreement

Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a form of Federated Byzantine Agreement in which each node picks the others it trusts, with no mining or staking involved.

Under the hood the two models are cousins, not clones. Both rely on trust between chosen participants rather than raw computing power or locked-up stake, and both let anyone run a node. Governance and control

This is where the two diverge most. XRP sits close to Ripple, a for-profit company that holds a large amount of XRP, much of it in scheduled escrow. The distinction is real but easy to overstate. A nonprofit steward is not automatically more decentralized than a company; what matters is how concentrated the tokens and the validators are, and both networks have faced fair questions on that front. The Stellar Development Foundation once held a very large slice of XLM and later reduced it, while Ripple's XRP holdings sit in public escrow that anyone can inspect. Neither is a fully leaderless network in the way Bitcoin aims to be.

The useful question is which network's ecosystem, partners, and token you actually want exposure to, since the raw settlement experience is close to identical.

In practice, XRP tends to show up where the counterparties are banks, brokers, or larger payment firms, because Ripple has aimed its products there. Stellar tends to appear in remittance corridors, local-currency on and off ramps, and financial-inclusion projects, reflecting its foundation's mission. Plenty of builders could use either, and some assess both before choosing, so the "winner" is often just whoever already has the partners in a given corridor.

If your interest is the asset rather than the plumbing, treat XRP and XLM as two bets on similar theses with different sponsors. A few myths cloud this comparison. The biggest is that Stellar is just "a copy of XRP," which ignores that Stellar moved to its own consensus and its own governance years ago.
