Ledger Delays the Launch of Controversial Service Ledger Recover

May 23,2023,15:43

Hardware wallet maker Ledger announced that it won't release Ledger Recover, its new key recovery service, until the Ledger Recover code is open sourced.

Last week, Ledger announced Ledger Recover. For those who enable the service, three encrypted shards of their seed phrases will be sent to three custodians, which can be used to recover the access of users' funds when they lose the seed phrases. The service was widely criticized by the crypto community, and Ledger's response put the company in a PR crisis.

In the latest update, Ledger announced it will accelerate its open sourcing roadmap. "We will include as much of the Ledger operating system as possible, starting with core components of the OS, and Ledger Recover, which won't be released until this work is complete."
