How Does Meta Make Money? Where Its Revenue Comes From

BloFin Academy10/16/2026

Most of the apps on your phone cost nothing to download or use. Yet some of the companies behind them are among the most profitable in the world, so somebody is paying, and it is rarely the person scrolling.

The quick answer, that these companies sell ads, is true but leaves a lot out. It says little about which apps carry the ads or where in the world the money is earned. It also skips which parts of the business lose money, and which new sources of income are starting to grow.

The clearest way to see the full picture is to read the company's own figures. Big listed companies split their revenue by source, by business unit and by where their customers are. Lay those splits side by side over a few years and you see both how the business works today and how it is changing.

Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is one of the clearest cases, because nearly every dollar it earns comes from one activity. On BloFin you can hold tokenized Meta (METAX) on the METAX/USDT Spot market, or take a leveraged long or short position with the METAUSDT Perpetual. The revenue figures Meta reports each quarter are among the biggest things that move both.

How does Meta make money?

Meta makes money mainly by selling ads that people see while using Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and WhatsApp. Between April and June 2026, ads brought in $59.4 billion of Meta's $60.8 billion revenue, or 97.6%. Paid messaging, subscriptions and Reality Labs hardware made up the rest (source: Meta Q2 2026 results).

The first half of 2026 tells the same story at a larger size. Meta took in $117.1 billion over those six months: $114.4 billion from ads, $1.9 billion of other revenue and $833 million from Reality Labs (source: Meta Q2 2026 results). Put on an easier scale, it looks like this:

Source of revenue, first half of 2026

Revenue

Out of every $100 Meta earned

Advertising

$114.4 billion

$97.67

Other revenue from the apps

$1.9 billion

$1.61

Reality Labs

$833 million

$0.71

Total

$117.1 billion

$100.00

The last column is worked out from Meta's figures. Other revenue is money people and businesses pay Meta directly inside its apps, such as fees for WhatsApp business messages and paid subscriptions. Reality Labs is the unit that sells headsets and AI glasses.

So when you read that Meta is an ad company, that is close to literally true. A 1% change in ad sales in the June 2026 quarter was worth about $594 million. That is more than the $431 million Reality Labs earned in those three months (source: Meta Q2 2026 results). It is also why news about advertisers matters far more to Meta's revenue than news about headsets, as what moves Meta's stock price shows.

What ads Meta sells and where they run

Meta sells space for ads inside its apps. Advertisers pay either for the number of times an ad is shown or for the actions people take, such as a click. Meta's annual report says ads can appear on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and WhatsApp, and also on other companies' apps and websites (source: Meta 10-K for 2025).

Inside each app, the ads sit where you already spend time. The annual report says Meta earns more from Feed and Stories for each unit of use than from Reels, its short-video format, even though Reels is growing in usage (source: Meta 10-K for 2025). That gap matters, because when time moves from the feed to short videos, Meta has to show more ads, or charge more for each one, just to keep revenue level.

Say you scroll past a sponsored post for running shoes on Instagram. If the shoe brand pays by the number of times its ad is shown, Meta earns a small amount the moment it appears on your screen. If the brand pays by the click, Meta earns only if you tap through to the shop. Across billions of people, those small amounts added up to about $652 million of ad revenue a day in the June 2026 quarter, worked out.

Meta is also putting ads into its newer apps. Chief financial officer Susan Li told analysts in July 2026 that ads on Threads were now live worldwide. She said ads in the Status section of WhatsApp were on track for a global rollout (source: Meta Q2 2026 earnings call). She also said Advantage+, Meta's AI tools that build and aim campaigns for advertisers, had reached a yearly revenue rate of more than $75 billion.

Two figures decide how much the ad business earns each quarter: how many ads Meta shows and the average price of each one. Meta publishes the change in both with every set of quarterly results, and what pushes ad volume and ad prices up or down is the core of Meta's advertising business.

WhatsApp messaging, Meta Verified and other revenue

Meta's other revenue is the money its apps earn without ads, mostly from businesses paying to send messages on WhatsApp and from people paying for Meta Verified. It passed $1 billion in a single quarter for the first time between April and June 2026, up 73% on a year earlier (source: Meta Q2 2026 earnings call).

Meta's annual report lists what sits in that line. It holds paid messaging from WhatsApp, Meta Verified subscriptions, and fees from developers who use Meta's payment tools. The report says most of the $862 million rise in 2025 came from WhatsApp messaging and Meta Verified (source: Meta 10-K for 2025). A shop that sends you delivery updates through WhatsApp's business tools can pay Meta for those messages, which is how WhatsApp earns money without showing you an ad in a chat.

The line is still small, but it is growing faster than ads. Other revenue was $721 million for the whole of 2021 and $2.6 billion in 2025, about 3.6 times larger, worked out (source: Meta full-year 2022 results) (source: Meta 10-K for 2025). Ad revenue grew by about 71% over the same years. In the first half of 2026 alone, other revenue reached $1.9 billion, almost three quarters of the 2025 total.

Meta is adding more ways to charge users and businesses directly. On the July 2026 call, Susan Li named subscriptions and selling access to Meta's own AI models as two extra sources of revenue. She described Meta One as the next step for its paid plans (source: Meta Q2 2026 earnings call). Meta does not report revenue for each app, and how WhatsApp makes money goes deeper on the messaging business.

Muse and Meta's newest ways to earn

Muse, the personal AI agent Meta launched on September 8, 2026, is set up to earn money from subscriptions. Meta says Muse is free for most of what people need, with paid plans for those who want more. It also says Muse does not share people's chats with Meta's ad systems (source: Meta Newsroom).

That makes Muse different from almost everything else Meta sells. Facebook and Instagram are free because advertisers pay. Muse charges the people who want more from it directly, and Meta has not said which revenue line those subscriptions will be reported in. Muse is rolling out in the US first, on iOS, Android and the web.

Three weeks later Meta added a version for business owners. On September 29, 2026 it launched Muse for Small Business, which links to a company's Facebook and Instagram business accounts and to tools such as Shopify, Stripe and QuickBooks. It can draft growth plans and ad campaigns, and it follows the same pricing as Muse, free for most uses with paid plans on top (source: Meta Newsroom, Muse for Small Business).

That second launch ties Muse back to the ad business. In July, Mark Zuckerberg said Meta would charge for its business AI tools through a mix of subscriptions and pricing based on use. He added that he expects more of them to work like Meta's ad systems, where businesses pay only when Meta gets results for them (source: Meta Q2 2026 earnings call). An agent that writes a small shop's ad campaign also makes it easier for that shop to buy Meta ads.

Meta's shares closed September 2026 at $725.18, up about 27% from $572.34 at the end of August (source: Yahoo Finance META history). You can follow that price on the METAX/USDT Spot page, and the METAUSDT Perpetual page lists the contract's live price and its funding rate.

Meta's two segments: The apps and Reality Labs

Meta reports its business as two segments. The Family of Apps segment holds Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Meta's other apps, and Reality Labs makes headsets, AI glasses and their software. In the first half of 2026 the apps made $50.3 billion of operating profit, while Reality Labs lost $8.6 billion (source: Meta Q2 2026 results).

The apps segment is where all of Meta's profit comes from. It turned 43% of its revenue into operating profit in the first half of 2026, and 52% in 2025, worked out from Meta's segment figures (source: Meta Q2 2026 results) (source: Meta 10-K for 2025). Put simply, the apps kept about 43 cents of profit from each dollar they earned in early 2026, after paying for the staff and data centers behind them.

Reality Labs works the other way around. In 2025 the Reality Labs segment earned $2.2 billion and lost $19.2 billion, and Meta says its spending cut the company's operating profit by about that much (source: Meta 10-K for 2025). That is about $8.70 lost for every $1 of Reality Labs revenue. Its revenue rose 16% in the June 2026 quarter. Susan Li put that down to strong sales of AI glasses, partly offset by fewer Quest headset sales (source: Meta Q2 2026 earnings call).

So the answer to "what is Meta's most profitable product?" is the apps segment as a whole, since Meta does not split profit between Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. How Instagram makes money looks at how ads work on that one app.

Meta revenue by year

Meta's revenue grew from $117.9 billion in 2021 to $201.0 billion in 2025, a rise of about 70% in four years (source: Meta full-year 2022 results) (source: Meta 10-K for 2025). The only year it fell was 2022, by about 1%. In the first half of 2026 revenue rose 30% on the same months of 2025 (source: Meta Q2 2026 results).

Operating income is profit from the business before interest and tax, and the operating margin is that profit as a share of revenue (source: Meta 10-K for 2025). Meta made a profit in every one of these years, and 2022 was the weakest, when revenue dipped and the Reality Labs loss grew. The 2026 margin is worked out from Meta's half-year figures. Net income for that half is higher than operating income because Meta recorded a one-time tax benefit of $8.0 billion in the first quarter (source: Meta Q1 2026 results).

Meta revenue by region

Meta earns a little under half its revenue from users in the US and Canada, and the rest from Europe, Asia-Pacific and other regions. In the first half of 2026, users in the US and Canada brought in $50.9 billion, or 43.5% of revenue. Europe gave 23.7%, Asia-Pacific 18.9% and the Rest of World 14.0%, worked out (source: Meta Q2 2026 slides).

Between the June 2022 and June 2026 quarters, the mix moved slowly toward places outside North America. The US and Canada share dipped in 2024 and rose again by 2026, so the shift holds over the four years as a whole.

Each share comes from Meta's revenue by user location, which Meta bases on where its users are when they see an ad or buy something (source: Meta Q2 2024 slides). Meta's Rest of World takes in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East (source: Meta 10-Q for the second quarter of 2026). It grew fastest, rising from 11.1% to 14.0% of revenue.

Meta's quarterly filing splits the same revenue a second way, by the address of the customer who pays the bill, and the two splits tell different stories. In the June 2026 quarter, advertisers based in Asia-Pacific paid Meta $16.1 billion, while users in Asia-Pacific brought in $11.2 billion (source: Meta 10-Q for the second quarter of 2026). The gap of about $4.9 billion shows that, on balance, firms based in Asia-Pacific pay for ads shown to people in other regions.

Meta also reports how much it earns per person. Its average revenue per person, or ARPP, is Family of Apps revenue divided by the average number of daily users over the quarter. It was $16.86 in the June 2026 quarter, up from $13.65 a year earlier (source: Meta Q2 2026 slides). Spread over the 91 days of the quarter, that is about 19 cents per person per day.

Meta's profit margin and its biggest costs

Meta's operating margin, the share of revenue left as operating profit, was 31% in the second quarter of 2026, down from 43% a year earlier. Costs rose 55% to $42.0 billion while revenue rose 28%. Those costs included legal charges totaling $2.4 billion and severance costs of $1.2 billion (source: Meta Q2 2026 results).

Here is where each $100 of that quarter's revenue went, worked out from Meta's income statement (source: Meta Q2 2026 results). Research and development, Meta's largest cost, took $35.62. The cost of running the apps and data centers took $18.63, general and admin costs took $9.23, and marketing and sales took $5.64. That left $30.88 of operating profit.

Research and development is the cost to watch. It rose 67% from a year earlier, which is why a quarter of strong ad growth can still end with lower profit. Pay in shares is another big cost that uses no cash, and Meta's share-based pay came to $20.4 billion in 2025, about 10% of revenue (source: Meta 10-K for 2025).

The biggest spending of all reaches these costs only slowly. Meta's data center and server purchases count as capital spending, which reaches profit as depreciation over several years, so it hits cash first.

What Meta's revenue means for METAX and METAUSDT holders

If you hold Meta through BloFin, its revenue figures matter just as they do for a shareholder, because the METAX token and the METAUSDT Perpetual both follow Meta's share price. Every quarter the ad revenue line, the expense outlook and the margin arrive in one release, so a single report can shift all three at once.

Each product reacts in its own way. Meta reports after the 4PM ET Nasdaq close, and METAX/USDT's written schedule is 24 hours a day on weekdays, so the token can react before Nasdaq reopens (source: Meta's results date notice) (source: BloFin xStocks risk disclosure). With the perpetual you can bet on a rise or a fall using leverage, which makes both the gain and the loss from a revenue surprise larger. Check the METAUSDT Perpetual's margin and funding before you size a position.

Whichever you use, Meta's revenue mix comes down to three lines that change from quarter to quarter: ad revenue growth, the other revenue line and the Reality Labs loss. The first tells you whether Meta's main engine is still growing, the second shows whether newer sources such as WhatsApp messaging and Meta Verified are adding up, and the third shows what the hardware bet is costing.

Frequently asked questions

When did Meta buy Instagram and WhatsApp?

Facebook, as Meta was then called, agreed to buy Instagram in April 2012 for about $1 billion in cash and shares (source: Meta Newsroom, Instagram). It announced the WhatsApp deal on February 19, 2014. That price was about $16 billion, made up of $4 billion in cash and about $12 billion in shares (source: Meta WhatsApp announcement). Both apps now sit inside the Family of Apps segment.

Does Meta sell your data to advertisers?

Meta's privacy policy states that it does not sell any of its users' information to anyone, and never will (source: Meta Privacy Policy). Advertisers pay Meta to show their ads to the kinds of people they choose. Meta's systems then pick who sees each ad, so the money comes from the ads themselves.

Does Meta make money from its AI models?

It has started to. In July 2026 Meta said it had launched a model API at a competitive price, which lets developers use Meta's AI in their own apps. It had also made its Muse Spark model available to US developers through OpenRouter, and plans to open the API to more countries and to large companies (source: Meta Q2 2026 earnings call). Meta has not said how much the API earns.

How much revenue does Meta make per employee?

About $3.0 million a year, based on revenue of $228.2 billion in the year to June 30, 2026 and a headcount of 75,472 at that date (source: Meta Q2 2026 results). That headcount still included about 8,000 people affected by Meta's May 2026 layoffs. Most of them were due to leave the count by the end of September, so the figure per remaining employee is higher.

Does Threads make money?

Threads earns money from ads, which went live worldwide in the second quarter of 2026. Mark Zuckerberg said Threads had passed 500 million monthly users by July 2026, and called it the fastest-growing conversation app ever (source: Meta Q2 2026 earnings call). Meta does not report Threads revenue on its own, so its ad sales count in the advertising line with Facebook and Instagram.
