METAX vs META Perpetual: Which to Trade and What Each Costs

BloFin Academy10/20/2026

Plenty of people who keep their savings in stablecoins also follow the big US technology companies, and many would rather act on a view about one of those shares from the account they already use. Crypto exchanges now list two quite different instruments for that purpose, side by side on the same screen, and both of them move with the same share price.

The difference between them shows up over time, in what each one charges you for holding it. One costs a trading fee on the way in and again on the way out, and nothing in between. The other adds or takes a small payment several times a day for as long as the position stays open. Over a few weeks those payments can outweigh the trading fee, and they can run in your favor as often as against you.

A tokenized share is the instrument that behaves most like owning the stock, because a real share sits in custody behind each token and you pay its full price. A perpetual future is a contract on the price alone: it never expires, it lets you use leverage, and it lets you bet on a fall as easily as on a rise.

On BloFin, Meta Platforms comes in both forms, as the METAX/USDT Spot pair and the METAUSDT Perpetual. Which one suits you turns on how long you plan to hold, which way you expect Meta to move and how deep a fall you could sit through.

What is the difference between METAX and the META perpetual?

METAX and the META perpetual follow Meta's share price on BloFin in two forms. METAX is a token you buy outright, with one Meta share in custody behind each token. The METAUSDT Perpetual is a USDT-settled contract traded long or short at 1x to 20x (source: BloFin METAUSDT contract details).

The token is the closer match to owning a share. Backed Assets (JE) Limited issues tokenized Meta (METAX) as a tracker certificate on Meta's Class A stock and keeps real shares with custodians behind the tokens (source: Backed Meta xStock). The price on your screen therefore follows a share that exists. You pay the full price, the tokens sit in your account, and the most you can lose is what you paid.

The perpetual is an agreement between traders on where Meta's price goes. BloFin's stock futures give you no ownership of the share or of any token. They take their price from a basket of tokenized stock prices already trading in the market (source: BloFin stock futures notice). You post margin, a deposit that backs the position, and leverage sets how much Meta that deposit controls.

Because both follow one share, their prices stay close: over the 720 hours to October 9, 2026, METAX's hourly close sat a median 0.20% above the perpetual's. The real differences lie in cost, risk and timing.

What you hold with METAX and with the perpetual

With METAX you hold tokens, and each one is a claim on the issuer that tracks one Meta share. With the perpetual you hold a position, a contract settled in USDT that needs margin, pays or receives funding and can point either way. That one difference decides how dividends, stock splits, shorting and the worst case work.

Direction is the plainest split. METAX gains only when Meta rises, because the spot market sells you tokens you then own, while the perpetual lets you short Meta on BloFin as easily as you open a long.

Meta pays a dividend of $0.525 a share each quarter, most recently to holders of record on September 21, 2026 (source: Meta dividend announcement). The xStocks issuer reinvests each payment, after withholding tax, into more shares and raises token balances to match (source: xStocks dividends and splits), so Meta's dividend reaches a METAX holder as extra tokens. On the perpetual, BloFin handles a Meta stock split through a separate market notice that sets out how the event is treated (source: BloFin METAUSDT listing notice).

The worst case is where the two part company most. A METAX balance can fall with Meta and still stay yours, so you choose when to sell. A META perpetual position is closed by liquidation once its margin drops to the maintenance level, which is 2.50% of the position's value for positions up to 100 META (source: BloFin META position tiers).

Trading costs differ too, starting with BloFin's fee for the token, which sits at 0.2000% a trade because METAX/USDT is on its list of higher-risk spot symbols (source: BloFin fee schedule). The METAX/USDT Spot page shows the token's live price and order book, and the METAUSDT Perpetual page shows the current funding rate with a countdown to the next settlement.

Trading fees, funding and the issuer's yearly fee

METAX costs a flat 0.2% of the trade each time you buy or sell, and nothing on BloFin while you hold it. The perpetual costs 0.06% a side as a taker, or 0.02% as a maker (source: BloFin fee schedule), plus a funding payment at each settlement, normally every eight hours.

That METAX rate is the same whether your order is a maker, one that waits in the order book until it is filled, or a taker that fills at once. On the perpetual a maker pays less than a taker, and BloFin's fee structure explains how rates fall as your trading volume grows. Buying and later selling 1,000 USDT of METAX therefore costs about 4 USDT in fees, while opening and closing a perpetual position of the same size with market orders costs about 1.20 USDT.

The issuer adds no charge of its own today. Backed takes no management fee on the Meta tracker for now, while keeping the right to start one at no more than 0.25% a year (source: Backed Meta xStock). Applied to 1,000 USDT for 30 days, that ceiling would come to about 0.21 USDT, which is small next to the trading fee.

Funding is the perpetual's running cost, and it can also be a running credit. Crypto funding rates are payments between long and short traders that keep a perpetual near its index: a positive rate means longs pay shorts, and when it turns negative the shorts pay the longs. You pay or receive the rate times the whole position's value, so leverage raises the amount.

Those numbers give a quick way to compare the two fee bills for a long position.

Gap in trading fees ÷ funding rate per settlement = settlements before the perpetual's cheaper entry is used up.

At Regular rates, a METAX round trip costs 0.20% + 0.20% = 0.40% of the trade. Opening and closing the perpetual with market orders costs 0.06% + 0.06% = 0.12%, a gap of 0.28 of a percentage point.

At +0.0120% a settlement, roughly where the rate sat from October 6 to October 13, 2026 (source: BloFin METAUSDT funding history), a long pays back that 0.28-point head start in about 23 settlements, or close to 8 days at three a day. When the rate is negative the head start keeps growing, because the long is being paid. The spread costs both routes something as well: a market buy pays the best offer, a market sell takes the lower best bid, and each trading page's order book shows the gap. An order larger than the quantity at the best price adds slippage on METAX on top of that gap.

Holding 1,000 USDT of Meta for 30 days on each route

Over the 30 days to 2PM UTC on October 9, 2026, 1,000 USDT in METAX returned about 10.7% after fees. A 1x perpetual long returned about 11.3% of its margin, because funding over the month came close to zero. At 2x and 5x the perpetual multiplied the gain, and the fall it could survive shrank.

Say you put 1,000 USDT, about $1,000, into each route at 2PM UTC on Wednesday, September 9, while Nasdaq was open and the perpetual was taking new orders. You then close each one at the same hour on Friday, October 9. BloFin's hourly prices put METAX at 649.28 USDT at the start and 721.39 USDT at the end. The perpetual moved from 645.77 to 719.61 USDT over the same hours.

The METAX side is simple arithmetic. The 0.2% fee comes out of the tokens you receive, which leaves 1.537 METAX, and the sale pays 0.2% again, so the 1,000 USDT ends at about 1,106.56 USDT. The perpetual comes in steps of 0.01 META, so 1,000 USDT of margin at 1x buys a position of 1.54 META, worth 994.49 USDT. At 2x the same margin carries 3.09 META, and at 5x it carries 7.74 META.

Funding settled 94 times in the window, including four hourly settlements on the evening of Sunday, September 20, and came in positive 45 times and negative 49 times. Added up, the rates came to −0.0294%, so a long was paid a little over the month (source: BloFin METAUSDT funding history).

The perpetual's funding figures apply each settlement's rate to the contract's opening price for that hour, a close stand-in for the mark price, the price BloFin uses to value open positions, and its fees use BloFin's Regular taker rate. The liquidation falls use BloFin's formula for an isolated long with the 2.50% maintenance margin and a 0.06% closing fee (source: BloFin liquidation price FAQ).

The 1x perpetual came out ahead of METAX for two reasons, and neither is fixed. Its fees were about 3 USDT lower, and METAX started the month 0.54% above the perpetual and ended it 0.25% above, so the token gave up about 0.3 of a percentage point that the contract kept. A month with steady positive funding, or a token premium that widened instead, would have tipped the result the other way.

METAX also collected something the perpetual never does. Meta's September 21 record date fell inside the window, so a METAX balance would have grown by the reinvested dividend, worth about 0.08% of the token's price before withholding tax. The perpetual received nothing for it.

Leverage multiplied the gain in a rising month. The perpetual's lowest price in the window, 637.43 USDT on September 14, was only 1.29% below the entry, so even the 5x position stayed far from its liquidation price. Funding on a leveraged Meta position can change a great deal from one month to the next, and at 5x every change counts five times over.

Funding and tracking through the September 2026 rally

During Meta's September 2026 rally, funding on the META perpetual ran negative, so shorts paid longs: 19 of the 20 settlements from September 17 to September 22 were below zero. Over the 30 days to August 9 longs were paid about 1.62% of their position's value, while in the 30 days to September 9 they paid about 0.19%.

Meta's shares closed 11.34% higher at $741.25 on Monday, September 21, a move The Next Web linked to investors betting on Muse, Meta's new personal AI agent (source: The Next Web). On BloFin, both instruments followed the move closely, with the perpetual's UTC daily close up 15.96% from September 18 to September 24 and METAX's up 16.16%.

Holding a long through those days cost nothing in funding and in fact earned a little. Between the 4PM UTC settlements of September 17 and September 22, BloFin's funding history shows the 20 rates adding up to −0.2065%, so a 1,000 USDT long received about 2 USDT while the price climbed. Rates below zero signal a contract priced under its index, and they made a short costlier to keep just as Meta jumped.

The month-by-month totals show how far funding can swing, with each 30-day window ending at 2PM UTC on its date.

The token kept its own small premium through all of this. Across the 720 hours from September 9 to October 9, METAX closed below the perpetual in just 2 of them, and the median gap put the token 0.20% higher. The gap peaked at 0.43% on the morning of September 24, the day of Meta's September high close, which is when METAX and the perpetual disagreed on price the most in those 30 days.

From October 6 to October 13 the rate settled at or near +0.0120%, a level at which longs pay. Funding is set one settlement at a time, so a month's total is only known once the month is over, and the funding tab on the perpetual's data page shows each past settlement.

Trading hours and Meta's earnings reports

METAX trades 24 hours a day on weekdays under BloFin's written schedule for xStocks. The META perpetual takes new positions during US regular hours, 1.30PM to 8PM UTC while US daylight saving time runs and 2.30PM to 9PM UTC in standard time, and may be limited to reduce-only orders outside them. Meta reports its quarterly results after the Nasdaq close.

That schedule comes from BloFin's xStocks risk disclosure, which also warns that digital asset prices can change quickly at any hour, outside normal business times included (source: BloFin xStocks risk disclosure). For the perpetual, BloFin's stock futures notice says trading may be limited to reduce-only orders outside the weekday session, on Saturdays and Sundays and on public holidays. Reduce-only means you may cut or close what you hold, while any order that would enlarge the position waits for the session.

Meta set its third-quarter 2026 release for after the market closed on Wednesday, October 21 (source: Meta third-quarter 2026 date), and it announces each report date in advance (source: Meta investor relations). That close is 4PM ET, or 8PM UTC while US daylight saving time runs, which is the minute the perpetual's regular window ends. In standard time Nasdaq's close and the perpetual's window both end an hour later, at 9PM UTC. Say you want exposure for a report: a new perpetual position may have to be opened before that close on the day, while METAX keeps trading through the evening on its weekday schedule. Either way, an open position moves with the news, and the perpetual can still be closed at any hour.

The July 2026 report night shows what that looks like. After Meta's second-quarter results on July 29, 2026, both instruments kept quoting. From their prices at 7PM UTC, an hour before Nasdaq closed and the results came out, METAX fell as low as 528.73 USDT, about 11.9%, while the perpetual reached 520.12 USDT, about 13.2%. In the two hours from 8PM UTC, 33.8 METAX and 207.97 META changed hands on BloFin, so trading Meta around earnings carries on well after Nasdaq shuts.

Leaving works differently on each route. You exit METAX by selling it back into USDT on the same pair while that market is open, with the same order types you use for buying tokenized Meta on BloFin. You exit the perpetual with an order in the opposite direction, which reduce-only always allows.

A Meta share through a broker as a third route

Outside crypto, a Meta Class A share bought through a broker is the third way to hold Meta. You pay in dollars and trade it on Nasdaq from 9.30AM to 4PM ET, plus any extended hours your broker offers. It pays the dividend in cash and gives you a shareholder's vote.

Each Class A share carries one vote at Meta's meetings (source: Meta Form 10-K for 2025). The perpetual carries no vote, and METAX gives you no direct vote as a registered shareholder.

For someone whose money sits in stablecoins, the broker route adds steps. You would turn USDT into dollars, move them to a bank and then to a broker that serves your country, and wait for the US session to place the order. A short sale through a broker needs a margin account and borrowed shares, which is a bigger step than opening a short on the perpetual.

The broker route does fit some readers that METAX cannot. BloFin's xStocks are closed to US persons and to United Kingdom (UK) persons (source: BloFin xStocks risk disclosure), while a US resident can hold a real Meta share or a Meta ETF through a US broker.

Questions that decide between METAX and the perpetual

Five questions about your own plan separate METAX from the META perpetual. They cover how long you will hold, which way you expect Meta to move, how much of the position your own money covers, when you trade and where you live. BloFin's figures answer each one, and the choice stays with you.

How many weeks do you expect to keep the position? A long perpetual position starts with the lighter fee bill, and at the +0.0120% rate of early October it spends that head start in about eight days. In a month of negative funding, such as the 30 days to August 9, a long was paid to stay open instead. METAX costs the same round trip in fees whether you hold it for a day or a year, for as long as the issuer's reserved fee stays unused.

Do you expect Meta to rise or fall? If you expect a fall, only the perpetual lets you act on it on BloFin, and positive funding then pays a short. If you expect a rise, both routes work.

How much of the position should your own money cover? METAX and a 1x perpetual long both need the full value. At 2x a fall of about 48.7% liquidates a long, and at 5x about 17.9%, while METAX has no liquidation price at all. In the two hours after Nasdaq's 8PM UTC close on Meta's July report night, the perpetual fell nearly two thirds of the way to that 5x liquidation fall.

When do you need to trade? If you want to open positions in the evening or overnight on weekdays, METAX trades then and the perpetual may accept only reduce-only orders. The perpetual quotes at weekends too, which lets you close a position on a Saturday.

Where do you live? Before buying METAX on BloFin you confirm that you are neither a US person nor a UK person, and that you are outside the places BloFin restricts. Access to the perpetual also depends on your country, so your answer may settle the choice before any of the others.

Looking to hold or trade Meta from your crypto balance? To get started, you'll need to first create a BloFin account, fund your account with cryptocurrency, and navigate to the METAX/USDT Spot trading page or the METAUSDT Perpetual page, or browse the lead traders you can copy on METAUSDT.

Frequently asked questions

Can you hedge METAX with a short on the META perpetual?

You can hold METAX and open a short of the same size on the METAUSDT Perpetual, so a fall in Meta's price is offset by the short's gain. The combined position then moves little with Meta, and funding becomes its main running cost or credit: a positive rate pays the short, a negative rate charges it. Outside the perpetual's regular hours BloFin may accept only reduce-only orders, so plan to open the short inside them when hedging Meta with the perpetual.

Can a METAX holding be liquidated?

A METAX holding has no margin and no liquidation price, because you pay the full price for the tokens. If Meta falls, the value of your tokens falls with it, and you decide whether and when to sell. Your claim runs against the issuer, Backed Assets (JE) Limited, and its custodians, so the question of whether tokenized Meta is safe turns on issuer risk in place of liquidation risk.

Which one can you withdraw to your own wallet?

METAX is a token on public blockchains, so you can withdraw METAX to your own wallet on a supported network, and the network has to match on both sides. A perpetual position stays on BloFin, since it is a contract with other traders there. You can withdraw the USDT margin and any profit once the position is closed.

Does METAX cost more to trade than other spot pairs on BloFin?

At the Regular level, BloFin charges 0.1000% for maker and taker trades on most spot pairs. BloFin's fee schedule puts METAX/USDT on a separate list of higher-risk spot symbols at a flat 0.2000% for both, alongside other xStocks such as AAPLX, NVDAX, GOOGLX, AMZNX and TSLAX. The schedule is the place to check the rate on the day you trade.

Has funding on the META perpetual favored longs or shorts in 2026?

Across all 614 settlements from the contract's listing on March 26, 2026 to October 13, funding came in positive 316 times and negative 293 times, with five at zero. The rates added up to about +0.02%, so over the whole period neither side came out far ahead. Since early June the balance has tilted toward longs: of the 400 settlements from June 6, 248 were negative and the rates added up to about −1.74%, so shorts paid longs more than longs paid shorts. Single settlements since June 6 ranged from −0.0329% to +0.0565%, far narrower than the −0.6845% to +0.4063% range of the contract's first ten weeks, from late March to early June (source: BloFin METAUSDT funding history).

Nothing in this article constitutes financial advice, and nothing in it is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold METAX, the METAUSDT Perpetual or Meta in any form. METAX can lose as much of its value as Meta's share does, and your claim runs against its issuer. A leveraged perpetual position can be liquidated by a fall far smaller than one recent results night brought, funding can turn against your side at any settlement, and outside US hours BloFin may accept only orders that reduce a position.
